There is scientific research available concerning the impact of a Tae Kwon Do syllabus on learning processes. For example; The symmetrical nature of the forms or Katas, the impact of a challenging set sparring series that consists of attack and defence which actually improves reaction, timing and physical movements. In addition, an exploration of the the energy fields involved in practice is linked to scientific principles.

This subject needs to gain a higher profile as female sports now start to gain momentum in the media. Female self defence is not just about a ten week course given by some personal trainer or male martial artist. Women can gain a high level of personal protection through a bigger commitment to a martial arts organisation that offers equal proficiency for both male or female. Given the fact that there are more women at the top of the chain in Tae Kwon Do but there is less status for these women, significant change is fundamental in bringing about a real recognition of women in the martial arts, so as to create role models to encourage young women to take up martial arts for not just fitness but for their well-being.

There are masters and grandmasters that are still functioning within their particular martial art. Are you one of them? Are you part of a partnership or solo? How long have you been teaching or giving seminars. What do you think needs to change and what have you observed through your vast experience? What's wrong with the traditional martial arts?

About

I started Tae Kwon Do in Singapore in 1970 whilst serving with the British Royal Air Force, at a time when Tae Kwon Do was unheard of within Europe, and have trained with several Tae Kwon Do organisations in the UK.
